Room 3 Beaconsfield

On Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th November, Room 3 and 4, went on their EOTC Activities, with the Aoraki Polytech Teachers. We were split into two groups for the first two days and participated in either rock climbing/abseiling or kayaking. We went to Salt Water Creek for kayaking and Spur Road for the rock climbing/abseiling. There were four or five Polytech people taking us for each activity. When we were rock climbing/abseiling we had to wear a hard hat to protect our heads from falling rocks and had a harness around our bottoms for the carabena to attach the rope to us. Then we climbed up the rock faces and we had a Polytech person be-laying at the bottom. This means that they are attached to the rope that we are attached to and they feed it through the carabena while we are climbing. We also went abseiling, which is going backwards over the top of a cliff. It was very scary because you had to walk backwards and then all of a sudden you are going down a big cliff face. This was very challenging, most of us achieved this! When we went kayaking we had to wear pfd's (personal floating devices) that are the same as life jackets. We each had a kayak and a paddle. Before we got into the kayak we learnt about the blades on the paddle and where we should have our hands. Toby also told us how to use the paddle, spoon side facing into the water. We had to paddle over to the other side of the creek and raft up, this means all line up side by side and hold onto the other persons kayak. One of the games we played was when we were rafted up and two of us had to change kayak's, we had to walk over the top of the kayak's. A lot of people fell out of their kayak's but most of us remained dry! On the Friday we all went to Peel Forest together to walk in the bush. We went on the Acland Falls walk. Once again we split into two groups and went up at different times. We looked at the leaves on the trees, talked about the tracks that we were walking on and looked at the sign's pointing us in the right directions. When we got to the waterfall some of us filled up our drink bottles and others of us wet our heads and hats, it was really hot. We played a game after lunch called Scarecrow, which is a mixture of bullrush and stiff candle, it was fun. After that we went on the big tree walk, Neil talked to us about the tree and then we all went around it to see how many children we could fit round it. When we got back to the bus, we thanked the Polytech for taking us over the three days and then we got back on the bus. Because we had been so well behaved and it was very hot, we stopped in Geraldine and had ice blocks! It was a fantastic three days where we learnt a lot about kayaking, rock climbing and walking in the bush.

On Friday it was Pet Day. I was excited. I brought my dog Fleur. I also brought a sand tray garden and a boot and some flowers for floral footwear. First when I got to school I dropped off the sand tray garden on the seats on front of the library then I got my floral footwear in the library. Then I got Fleur, I gave her a pat thn I went to the place where you tie up your dog beside a tree. Fleur was beside Max, Campbell's dog, and beside Max was Ethan's dog Tip. Max liked Fleur. The first event was the dog handling, I got fourth equal. I got first for my sand tray garden and also for my floral footwear. I won the Senior Cup.

I hope you have all had a great holiday and are rested for the last term of the year. We have lots planned for this term so we will be very busy. A few things that we will focus on this term will be the Commonwealth Games, with our own games at school in the first week back on Thursday. We will also have our annual Pets Day in the second week of the term on the Friday. Along with these two events we will be having our joint Outdoor Activities days with Room 4 in week five, we will be kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling and bush walking. This will be a very physical three days, we are up for the challenge though!!! We also have our Rural Schools Athletics day on the 19th November. We will be looking at the different ways people celebrate Christmas, writing our own classroom newspaper and painting Christmas Trees, along with maths, writing and reading. Well here we are at the end of another busy term! We have spent a lot of time looking at Healthy Eating with a visit to Harold, making smoothies and baked potatoes. We looked at writing instructions and letters, our instructions were great we included a title, ingredients or equipment, then numbered steps using a verb. We read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, as well as watching the movie, to compare the book to the video, we also wrote letters to Harry through our Owl Post.

On Monday we went swimming. We did it for a week. On Monday the seniors went for the first week of swimming. That was Room 3, 4 and 5. It was at Century Pool. We had to change into our togs and get ready to hop into the pool. Then they called our names out and then we got in the pool safely. Then our swimming instructor told us her name. Her name was Jane. I learnt a lot and enjoyed it.

On Friday we watched the Harry Potter movie because we read the Harry Potter book. We got to eat popcorn and lollies. Ravenclaw won the group house points so Ravenclaw got the beanbags. The other houses are Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Gryffindor. In the movie Gryffindor win's and Harry Potter is in Gryffindor. It was great fun watching the movie.

On Wednesday 25 August 2010 the teachers played the A Netball Team. The teachers were wearing clown wigs and dressed in black to represent the Silver Ferns. The A team wore hula skirts. Claire Smolinski from South Canterbury Netball came out to referee the game so that the teachers and A team had no influence over the referee (but this didn't work as the A team bought her off)! Megan, Mrs Rush and Mrs O'Toole played for the teachers. It took a long time to get the first goal, this was scored by the teachers. All the supporters were cheering for the A Team! Lyn and Adele played for the A team, Lyn cheated by coming on but not subbing anyone off. The teachers won 6-4.

On Monday 16 of August we went to Tekapo for our Ice Skating Trip. I went with my sister Sophie, my mum Sonya and my dad Andy. We went there to do ice skating, hot pools and the snow park. Most of the school went. First I went on the snow park with Sophie, Grace, Rosa and Naeve. I got a fast tube, it was really fast. Then I had to try and get up the hill, it took ages but dad helped me up, so I got there before Grace. After that we went ice skating. I fell over once, I tried to keep up, but I couldn't. We played Dancing on Ice. Next we went back on the snow park. Later we went in the hot pools and we played a mermaid game. I had a purple tail, Grace had a purple tail, Rosa had a rainbow tail, Eva had a rainbow tail and Sophie had a purple tail. Lastly we went back to the ice skating rink but we didn't have much time on it because they were cleaning it up. I liked the day in Tekapo because we had lot's of fun.

This term we are looking at Healthy Eating. We have made collage fruit to stick into a fruit bowl, we choose between banana's, apples, grapes, oranges and pears. We are writing instructions to make healthy foods and have already made Smoothies. We learnt that we had to write clear instructions and include all the steps, especially putting the lid on the blender, not to put the cup in the blender and to peel all the fruit. We are now going to look at making a healthy lunch food like a baked potato or maybe yoghurt, we haven't decided yet!

What a great start to the term! We had three members leave to go to Room 4 and we wish them well in there! We have five new children from Room 2 to fill their places. For the first two days back, we visited Harold the Giraffe and Jane from Life Education. We learnt about food and healthy choices. This has been great for leading us into our topic this term "Healthy Eating". We will look at food choices and cooking healthy options, making the packaging as well! A busy term is ahead with lots of work expected to be done and lots of healthy eating.

Wow, the end of another term! We have been very busy with our Kitchen Chemistry topic and our reading, maths and story writing. We had the Rural Schools Cross Country, we put in a fantastic effort to get top rankings. For the first 5 weeks of the term we had Miss O'Connor teaching us with Mrs White, that was nice. We have worked really hard this term and Mrs White has been very proud of us and our behaviour...most of the time! Have a great holiday and keep safe. :-)

On Monday the 21 of June Room 3 made bread. We made two types of bread. The first bread we made was going in the bread maker. First we put water in a bowl, then flour, sugar, yeast and oil. Then we put it into the bread maker. Next we got into groups to make another bread. Once we made the dough, some of us pulled pieces of dough up to make hedgehogs and we put raisins on as eyes. Mrs White put the hedgehogs on the oven. The bread in the bread maker took 3 1/2 hours and the hedgehogs took 15 minutes. Once the bread came out we got to eat it. It tasted good!! Yeast makes bread rise by making the gas carbon dioxide, this makes bubbles in the bread and that's how the bread rises.

On Tuesday we investigated what raisins do when we pit them into glasses of water, milk and lemonade. We had predicted what we thought would happen before we tried the experiment. A lot of us thought that the raisins would move up and down in the lemonade but not in the milk and water. Sophie, Thomas and Taj put 6 raisins into each cup and we timed them for two minutes to see what they would do. The raisins in the water and milk did nothing at all! The raisins sunk to the bottom in the lemonade and when we looked at them they were covered in bubbles from the lemonade. Then they started to move up and down in the water. They didn't all go at the same time or keep going continuously, but they were moving. We are now talking about why they didn't keep going, was it cause they were too heavy or was the lemonade not fizzy enough? What do you think?

We finally made our jelly and got to eat it! We got 2 cups each of hot, hot/cold and cold water. We put the jelly crystals in and watched to see if they dissolved. Then we waited to see how long it took them to set or if they would set! All the jelly crystals dissolved except for the normal jelly in cold water. We put them in the fridge and they all set except the cold water normal jelly. The jelly crystals went to the bottom and didn't dissolve. We learnt that in the cold water the jelly crystals did not dissolve, they need warmer water to melt the crystals. They still set if they have a little bit of warm and cold water. The cold water jelly crystals did dissolve and set because they are made differently to the normal jelly crystals. The jellies all set at the same time, the cold water jelly set quicker because it was already cold.

On cross country day, Thursday the fourth of June, at Cannington School, we had our race. All the Rural Schools (Beaconsfield, Cannington, St Josephs Pleasant Point, St Andrews, Timaru Christian and Barton Rural) competed in the race. All the schools lined up in their age groups, then we lined up at the starting line. The man who had the clappers clapped them together. All the children were as fast as a cheetah. When we went around the corner I saw Sue and Leanne cheering us on. The track was very muddy, one child slipped over in the mud. It was quite a far way to run. Next we went up the massive hill. The hill was slippery but I got up there, I was as fast as a cheetah too. I was nearly at the finish line, a child past me, then I nearly past him, but I didn't make it. I came ninth. I think I can do better next year.

This is another busy week as we get through the term. On Tuesday night there is a meeting in the Salisbury Room about the National Standards and reports - this is because our reports are coming home on Friday. We have Cross Country at Cannington School on Thursday, hopefully it doesn't rain before then, I'm not sure it will go ahead if it does, fingers crossed! We have been practising a bit for the cross country and will have to put in a big effort this week to be more prepared for our run. We are finishing our collages this week, they are looking fantastic, so if you have time you should come and see them!

Mrs Stevenson taught us how to make a collage out of material. First we had to draw a plan, then we had get a big bit of cardboard and draw our plan onto it. Then we used material, sometimes we had to draw on the material and cut it out. We would use hot glue, pva glue or glue sticks depending on how heavy the material was. We are making collages about winter.

Wow, we're getting through the term quickly. This is Miss O'Connor's last week with us in Room 3, we have enjoyed having her teach us. She has been teaching us about problems in stories and how to identify the adjectives in our stories for reading, splitting up numbers to add them in maths, describing a character for story writing, collaging for art and about Hua (eggs) for science. Thank you Miss O'Connor for all your hard work while teaching us!

On Tuesday 27 April the Aranui Theatre Group performed for us in the Salisbury Room. They performed Frank and Friends for us, this was about recycling, reducing and reusing our rubbish. It was about two sisters who had to clean the garage because their Dad didn't want to do it. While they cleaned they pretended to be pirates on a ship. They sung songs and did dances, they were pretty funny. Rosa was picked to join them on the stage and was called Blue Bra Betty, she had to sing with them and dance. At the end they had made Frank out of their rubbish and talked to us about how to recycle our rubbish by checking what sort of rubbish it was. We enjoyed it!

This week we are going to be watching the Aranui Theatre Group on Tuesday afternoon. Last time they were here they performed "Once Upon a Pie", I wonder what it will be about this time? Miss O'Connor is going to be teaching us a bit this week, so that will be good. We are participating in Jump Jam everyday now, our favourite seems to be Funky Town.

Welcome to the new term. For the first five weeks we have a visitor, Patricia O'Connor, with us. She will be teaching in Room 3 along with Mrs White. If you pop in please say hi to her. This term we are going to be busy with training for the cross country, our reports come out and parent interviews are occurring. If you are in at school pop in to see all the cool artwork that we will be doing this term. Also if you have old scraps of material we would love some for our artwork, as well as old tiles for the mosaic work we will be doing at the end of the term.

On Friday 19 March, it was the amazing Century Pool Swimming Sports. I had a yucky feeling in my stomach, like I was going to throw up. In my first race I got 2nd. Then I got in the finals and got 4th. I sat down and Finn shared his fizzer with me. I got two pieces and ate them. Then I did free style and I got 1st again. It was a busy day.

In the weekend, on 21 March, it was Top Schools at Westend Park. There was a water slide. It's name is the Slippery Slide. It was really marvelous going down it. The Polytech people had a new game, it was really wise. You had to direct the person that was blind folded. In my team there was Rosa, Grace, Ruby, Alex, Naeve, Blaize, Renee and Daniel. We rolled Mrs White in the tyre's. I had to wear pink googles. I enjoyed it.

On Tuesday 23.2.10, it was the school triathlon. The first race was at 11-12.30. These people were the 4-8 years. Then 0-3 years raced at 1.15-2.30. Most of the triathlon was held at the school and the was held outside. We had to do swimming, biking and running. I took my bike, helmet, clothes, goggles, shoes, sunscreen, sun hat, togs and towel. I was doing an individual race. When I heard Mrs Scott say GO! I raced off. I had to do six lengths. After the swim, I went straight to my bike. I got my t-shirt on then raced around the field on my speedy bike. I felt like I was going to fly off. When I had done all six laps, I put my bike back. I took a breath and raced off. I started off slow and then got faster. Leanne was there to help us cross the road. I got the stitch coming down the hill. I felt like I was going to give up but I didn't give up. I kept going. When I got to the top of the hill, I sprinted to the finish line. I ran as fast as I could. When I finished the race, I just wanted to clap, I was so proud of myself. I came second. After the triathlon Room 3 got to go for a swim. It felt great, I loved it. Then some people went home after the triathlon. I loved the day and I would love to do it again, next year.

We have settled into our classroom routines and are now focused on completing our activities! We are still working on doing our "BEST" with everything we do and making sure that we are helpful to others that are not quite sure of the routines. I have been impressed with everyone doing their homework, the standard of work in the classroom that is being finished and the attitudes that most of the children are demonstrating. We have been working on Natural Disasters and will now move on to Kitchen Chemistry next week, we will still keep an interest in the news and re visit any disasters that happen around the world.

February 2 2009 is the first day of the new school year! A lot of great fun learning experiences have been planned, with a big focus on doing our BEST and being responsible for our own learning and belongings.
This year we will be doing homework weekly, this will be our reading, spelling and some other areas that we have been working on in the classroom. We will also be swimming so don't forget your togs and we are going to be looking at a Science topic for the last half of the term.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday, your books and I will be waiting for you anxiously on Tuesday morning. Look for your name tag in the cloak room to put your bag there and then find your desk!!
